What Is a Roadworthy Certificate in NSW? (Safety Check Explained)

NSW calls it a Safety Check or 'pink slip'. Here's what each certificate is, when you need it, and what it costs.

Safety Check (pink slip) explained

In NSW, a Safety Check (also called a pink slip or e-safety check) is required to renew registration on vehicles more than 5 years old. It checks safety-critical items: brakes, steering, tyres, lights, and suspension. Carried out by an authorised inspection station (usually a mechanic or dealer). Cost: approximately $35–$75.

A separate inspection — the Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection (AUVI) — is required to register a previously unregistered vehicle, such as a grey import or a car from interstate. More comprehensive and more expensive than a pink slip.

When you need one — and when you don't

You need a Safety Check when: Your vehicle is more than 5 years old and you're renewing registration.

You don't need one when: You're selling the car. NSW law does not require the seller to obtain a Safety Check for a private sale (unlike Victoria).

When selling to a dealer: Licensed dealers are not legally required to present a roadworthy from the seller. They carry out their own inspection as part of the purchase.

Bottom line: unless you're renewing rego, you don't need to spend money on a Safety Check before selling.
